Most soldiers are clean shaven. Its easier for them to interact with the local populace with facial hair, as they are treated as adult males. I was in Afghanistan, and this I found to be the main reason. But I'm sure some troll will try and discredit my comment, or make an anti- American statement. But take it for what it's worth.
